Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has once again made history at its 29th Convocation Ceremony, affirming its distinction as the first public university in Malaysia to fully implement an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven system for convocation ceremony management.
This pioneering innovation, known as StageAI, is an intelligent event management solution powered by AI, developed in alignment with UNIMAS’s Digital Transformation agenda.
The core strength of StageAI lies in its efficient smart queue management system that integrates cutting-edge technologies such as:
- AI Voice Technology – An artificial intelligence audio system that produces pronunciation of each graduate’s name with perfect phonetic accuracy, consistency and zero errors – even when handling thousands of graduates from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Face Recognition System – Automatic facial recognition technology that provides real-time graduate identity verification, ensuring the scroll presentation process proceeds with optimal smoothness and speed.
- Sensor IoT Integration – An IoT sensor network that manages event flow with maximum efficiency and well-organized coordination.
StageAI was initially tested during the UNIMAS 28th Convocation Ceremony in 2024 and the Majlis Anugerah Gemilang UNIMAS (MAGU) 2025 before being fully implemented this year.
The implementation of StageAI has brought about a paradigmatic shift in operational efficiency. This innovation successfully resolved major logistical challenges, particularly:
- Audio Preparation Time: Drastically reduced from a 1-month period to just 2 days.
- Workforce Requirements: Minimized from 16 staff to only 6 staff.
StageAI represents the culmination of dedicated efforts and exemplary collaboration by the technology development team at Tun Abang Haji Openg Digital Centre (TAHODC), UNIMAS, integrating advanced expertise in artificial intelligence, digital multimedia, and stage automation.
The deployment of the StageAI System not only enhances the operational efficiency of event management at UNIMAS but also reaffirms the university’s strategic commitment to digital innovation. This initiative aligns with the broader “Smart Campus” vision and supports the cultivation of future-ready, technology-driven talent.
It is hoped that StageAI will serve as a distinguished benchmark in the organization of convocation ceremonies across Malaysia.
