Leadership is best learned through experience, and that was the driving force behind the Lead Forward programme organized by students of the MPU3452 Leadership Communication course from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) on 16 May 2026. Held at Dewan Sri Kota, SMK Kota Samarahan, the programme brought together 32 UNIMAS students and 22 Form 6 students for a day of interactive learning, collaboration, and personal growth.
Designed to nurture confident and capable young leaders, the programme reflected the values of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by providing meaningful learning opportunities beyond the classroom. At the same time, it promoted the principles of SDG 16 through activities that emphasized ethical, inclusive, and responsible leadership.
Rather than focusing on lectures or theory, participants engaged in a series of hands-on challenges that encouraged teamwork, communication, creativity, and problem-solving. Activities such as Our Team Our Poster and Highest Straw Tower required participants to work together, share ideas, and make collective decisions. Meanwhile, games like Broken Radio and Guess the Action tested critical thinking, adaptability, and effective communication under pressure. The programme concluded with Attack and Defend Balloon, a lively activity that strengthened bonds between participants while encouraging strategic thinking and collaboration.
Beyond the fun and excitement, Lead Forward created an environment where students from different backgrounds could connect, learn from one another, and develop a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives. The programme also provided valuable exposure to community engagement and experiential learning.
The success of this initiative highlights UNIMAS’ continued commitment to developing graduates who are not only academically capable but also ethical, community-minded, and equipped with the leadership skills needed to make a positive impact in society.
