The University-Industry Centre (UNIC) of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), in collaboration with Bank Islam, recently conducted a highly impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme in Muara Tebas, Kuching, Sarawak.
This initiative, which brought together the expertise and enthusiasm of students and faculty members from the Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development (FCSHD) and the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST), aimed to support and empower the local fishing community.

The programme’s highlights were extensively covered in various media, including RTM and TVS, underscoring its significance and success. The activities focused on knowledge transfer, community engagement, and sustainable practices, benefiting both the participants and the local residents.
The key activities and highlights of the programme at Muara Tebas included the educational workshops in which the experts and students from FCSHD and FRST conducted interactive sessions on sustainable fishing practices, technology integration in resource management, and cognitive development for community resilience. These workshops aimed to equip the villagers with skills and knowledge to improve their livelihoods.
In addition, the programme included hands-on projects where participants worked alongside the villagers to implement practical solutions for daily challenges. This not only fostered a sense of collaboration but also demonstrated the practical application of academic knowledge.
This is demonstrated by the composting demonstration, where the faculty members from FRST conducted a demonstration on composting fish waste and presented composting kits to the participants. This activity aimed to encourage sustainable waste management practices within the community.

The programme’s success was a testament to the strong partnership between UNIMAS and Bank Islam, showcasing the potential of collaborative efforts in driving social change. The local media coverage, including reports by RTM and TVS, further amplified the programme’s reach, inspiring other organisations to undertake similar initiatives.
Overall, the CSR programme at Muara Tebas not only strengthened the relationship between the university and the community but also created lasting impacts on the participants. The dedication of the UNIMAS experts and students, coupled with the support from Bank Islam, underscores the commitment to fostering sustainable development and community empowerment.
