KOTA SAMARAHAN, SARAWAK – [17 October 2023] – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) proudly announces that its team from the Faculty of Applied and Creative Art has secured a place as a finalist in the highly competitive SULAM Ideation, Invention, and Innovation Challenge (SULAM INNOVATE) 2023 competition. The team’s innovative “Place Branding for Kampung Meriyu” project has garnered well-deserved recognition, reflecting their unwavering dedication to service-learning and creative problem-solving.

The SULAM project, led by Athmar Helmi Ali Al-Arashi, has captured the essence of the competition’s mission, which is to foster service-driven innovation for the betterment of communities.

“Place Branding for Kampung Meriyu” is a testament to UNIMAS’s commitment to making a positive impact through education, innovation, and community engagement. The project was funded by UNIMAS SULAM Fund, under the purview of University Sustainability Centre (USC), UNIMAS. The team collaborates with Kampung Meriyu, Lundu, Sarawak as their community partner, addressing challenges to establish a compelling brand identity. Outputs include logos for food businesses, social media pages, unique videos, and documentaries. The collaboration received significant media coverage.

The SULAM INNOVATE 2023 competition represents a nationwide platform for Malaysian higher education institutions to demonstrate their dedication to SULAM (Service Learning Malaysia: University for Society) and innovative problem-solving.

The final round of the SULAM INNOVATE 2023 competition which will be held in November 2023, promises to be an exciting event, with UNIMAS poised to compete with four other top institutions in Category 1: SULAM Project from across the country. UNIMAS looks forward to the opportunity to showcase its project’s merits and demonstrate its commitment to improving communities.
