From May 1st to May 5th, 2024, 39 International Economics students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, led by Dr. Nur Farrahanie binti Ahmad Tarmizi and two other lecturers, participated in an enriching field trip to Pontianak, Indonesia. This excursion combined academic exploration, cultural immersion, and personal development, offering students a holistic learning experience.
Academic Exploration and Professional Insights
Organized by SPADE, Program Director Frances Fiona and Vice Program Director Anjali A/P Annob curated the itinerary which included visits to prominent financial institutions such as the Stock Exchange Indonesia and the Bank of Indonesia. These visits gave students practical insights into banking systems, monetary policies, and financial markets, deepening their understanding of economics and finance. In addition, students had the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, gaining valuable networking opportunities that could inspire and shape their future career paths.
Cultural Immersion and Personal Growth
Beyond academics, students were immersed in the rich cultural heritage of Pontianak and West Kalimantan. This cultural exposure fostered a deeper appreciation for local traditions and lifestyles, enhancing their cultural awareness and sensitivity. The trip also included volunteer activities at Panti Asuhan Pepabri, where students contributed to local initiatives, developing a sense of responsibility, empathy, and global citizenship.

The impact of this field trip was multifaceted, contributing to the student’s academic, personal, and social growth. Academically, direct exposure to financial institutions and professionals deepened their practical understanding of economic theories and financial practices. Personally, the experience challenged students to step out of their comfort zones, fostering leadership and community engagement. The cultural experiences broadened their perspectives, making them more culturally aware and sensitive.
