“Bejarah”, derived from the Sarawak Malay dialect, reflects the practice of ziarah or visiting, a deeply rooted cultural tradition in Sarawak. Especially during Hari Raya, Bejarah is more than a social visit. It is a symbol of openness, unity and mutual respect, where homes are opened to welcome family, relatives and friends regardless of background. This tradition captures the true spirit of togetherness that defines Sarawak’s multicultural identity.

A Bejarah visit is never complete without its signature elements. Guests are welcomed with an array of traditional delights such as the vibrant and intricately layered kek lapis Sarawak, a variety of local kuih, and colourful soda drinks that have become synonymous with festive gatherings. These offerings are not merely food and beverages but expressions of hospitality, generosity and cultural pride passed down through generations.

A Bejarah moment, where a simple handshake becomes a warm greeting, connecting hearts across cultures.

Bringing this tradition into the university setting, UNIMAS Global organised Bejarah Raya @ UNIMAS Global 2026 to provide international students with an authentic cultural experience. For many of them, this was their first exposure to the Sarawak way of celebrating Hari Raya. The open house concept allowed students to freely engage, interact and immerse themselves in a warm and welcoming environment that mirrors a typical Sarawakian home during the festive season.

What made the event even more meaningful was the participation of international students through a potluck initiative. Students brought dishes from their respective countries, transforming the gathering into a vibrant showcase of global cultures. This exchange of food became a powerful medium of storytelling, where each dish carried the identity, heritage and personal memories of home. In return, students not only experienced Sarawak’s traditions but also shared their own, creating a space of mutual cultural appreciation.

The presence of the Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Prof. Dr. Haji Ahmad Hata Rasit, further enriched the event. His engagement with students in a relaxed and friendly setting reflected the university’s commitment to inclusivity and student well-being. Moments like these strengthened the bond between university leadership and the international student community.

The impact of Bejarah Raya @ UNIMAS Global 2026 goes beyond a festive celebration. It serves as a platform for cultural diplomacy at the grassroots level, fostering understanding, respect and friendship among students from diverse backgrounds. For international students, it creates a sense of belonging and eases cultural adaptation. For the university, it reinforces its role as a global institution that values diversity and meaningful engagement.

Ultimately, Bejarah Raya at UNIMAS Global is not just about visiting, but about connecting. It is about opening doors, sharing stories and building bridges across cultures. Through traditions like Bejarah, the spirit of Sarawak continues to thrive, not only within homes but also within the global community of UNIMAS.
