BINTULU, 22 November 2025 — The quiet evening at Rumah Ambong, Batu 20 Jalan Bintulu–Miri, turned into a powerful learning session as 28 longhouse residents gathered for a Scam Awareness and Cyber Hygiene talk aimed at strengthening digital safety within the community.
The programme was delivered by Eaqerzilla Phang with strong support from AP Dr. Jacey Lynn Minoi and Dr. Jaya Laxshmi of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
Sponsored by CelcomDigi, the initiative reflects a growing commitment to empowering rural communities with essential online safety knowledge as internet connectivity expands across Sarawak.
Participants were introduced to real-world examples of scams such as phishing attempts, impersonation tactics, fake investments, and fraudulent online shopping schemes.
Facilitators demonstrated how subtle red flags, often overlooked, can help users detect digital threats before becoming victims.
Beyond scam identification, the session also spotlighted simple yet crucial cyber hygiene practices.
Attendees learned the importance of keeping devices updated, using strong passwords, enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), and performing regular data backups to safeguard personal information.
To measure the programme’s impact, pre- and post-surveys were conducted, revealing a marked improvement in participants’ understanding of safe online behaviour.
Adding excitement to the evening, an interactive quiz tested the residents’ newly gained knowledge, with small prizes awarded to enthusiastic participants.

Many residents expressed appreciation for the initiative, acknowledging its relevance as digital access becomes increasingly common in the area.
