Kota Samarahan, Sarawak – 20 April 2025 — Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to strengthen its role as a regional centre for medical education and research with the launch of the UNIMAS Cadaveric Workshop 2025. Held at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the 10-day programme brought together participants from Malaysia and ASEAN countries for comprehensive cadaveric training in advanced otology implants, advanced endoscopic skull base, rhinology, temporal bone and head and neck surgery.

The course, chaired by Professor Dr. Tang Ing Ping and his team, guided by respected facilitators from both local and international institutions. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, and was also graced by Professor Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit, Vice Chancellor of UNIMAS, and Professor Dr. Asri bin Said, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Both leaders reaffirmed UNIMAS’s commitment to advancing surgical education and healthcare excellence in Sarawak and beyond.

Since starting its otology implant services in 2012, Sarawak has seen close to 200 patients benefit from technologies such as bone bridge, middle ear implants, cochlear implants, and auditory brainstem implants. This reflects UNIMAS’s ongoing dedication to improving quality of life through specialised surgical care and continuous training.

This year’s course marks an important milestone, with expanded collaboration involving international academic partners and research focused on the ear, nose and throat. By integrating hands-on dissection with expert-led discussions, the programme fosters knowledge exchange and professional collaboration among Southeast Asian ENT specialists.

Participants gained practical experience with state-of-the-art equipment and real-world case simulations, alongside sessions on implant technologies, complex ear diseases, and surgical innovations. Through initiatives like this, UNIMAS aims to nurture skilled, confident surgeons who will contribute to healthcare improvements in their respective countries.

In conjunction with the workshop, UNIMAS hosted a Chronic Rhinosinusitis Workshop, aligned with Global CRSwNP Awareness Day. The event featured clinical updates, case discussions, and free nasal endoscopy screenings to raise public awareness of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP), promoting early diagnosis and better management.

The workshops were made possible through the generous support of — MED-EL, Hearlife, Medtronic, Storz, Zeiss, Ummi Surgical, Humedical, Demed and Sanofi, dedicated partners in advancing ENT care. As UNIMAS continues to expand regional collaborations, the UNIMAS Cadaveric Dissection Workshop 2025 stands as a model for cross-border partnership, nurturing future ENT surgeons while advancing research, education, and public health in Sarawak and across Southeast Asia.
