The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH), UNIMAS, proudly showcased its Eco-soap Community Project at the Islamic Creativity and Innovation Festival: The Beauty of Islam in Kuching from 14 – 17 August 2025. Organized by the Islamic Information Center (IIC), the festival was part of a series of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of Majlis Islam Sarawak (MIS).
A spin-off from the KPT-UNIMAS Social Innovation Fund Project, the Eco-soap initiative aims to transform household waste into a sustainable product with social and economic value, specifically by converting used cooking oil into eco-friendly soap.
At the exhibition booth, visitors were introduced to practical ways of embracing environmental sustainability through responsible waste management and participation in the circular economy. Samples of freshly made and cured soaps in various shapes, sizes, colors and scents were put on display to give the public a hands-on view of the simple soap-making process.

Additionally, eco-soaps produced by members of Koperasi Rezeki Kerjasama Kuching Berhad were also exhibited and offered for sale at discounted prices. Designed, packaged, and presented for various uses – such as dishwashing, handwashing, laundry, and even as door gifts – these products highlighted a potential model of successful social entrepreneurship.

The eco-soap team also used the event to promote their Professional Continuous Excellence Learning (ProCEL) training programs, inviting interested individuals and organizations to engage with UNIMAS for a hands-on eco-soap production. The eco-soap initiative would fit into many organizational CSR efforts in balancing sustainability with social good.

FSSH representative, Noor’ain Aini, said the project truly reflects UNIMAS’s mission to bridge academic expertise with societal needs.
“This is where social scientists come in and play their parts, not only to create awareness and encourage sustainable practices, but also to open new doors of opportunities for the local communities. This initiative focuses on knowledge transfer to empower people with skills that benefit both the environment and improve their livelihoods,” she explained.

While the project highlights UNIMAS’s commitment to sustainability, community empowerment and innovative practices, it also resonates with the spirit of the festival – celebrating the beauty of Islam through creativity, innovation, and positive change in daily life.
