In response to the devastating floods that impacted several areas in Sarawak, the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), in collaboration with UNIMAS Water Centre, PEKAMARA and Yayasan Hasanah, successfully executed the Sarawak Prihatin Flood Mission in five severely affected villages. The mission, which took place from 17th to 19th February 2025, targeted the communities of Kampung Siol Kandis, Kampung Kudei, Kampung Endap, Kampung Tanjung Tuang and Kampung Hulu Serian.

Over the course of three days, around 50 volunteers turned up to prepare and distribute essential basic food supplies such as rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil, canned food, and biscuits, and provided hygiene items like soap, detergent and dishwasher. These items were crucial for helping families maintain their basic needs and health during the recovery phase.

UNIMAS is committed to promoting community engagement and social responsibility, and the flood relief mission served as a powerful example of this commitment. This three-day program brought together a diverse group of individuals, including lecturers, students, assistant engineers, and personnel from the Civil Defence Force (APM) of UNIMAS. By encouraging students and staff to participate in volunteer efforts, the university is cultivating a culture of care and empathy. For students in the Civil Engineering Department, the mission was an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in disaster management and post-flood rehabilitation, strengthening their future careers as engineers and community leaders.

In conclusion, the Sarawak Prihatin Flood Mission was a successful example of how collaboration, volunteerism, and community support can make a real difference during times of crisis. The program not only provided immediate aid but also promoted long-term recovery and resilience. Together, we continue to rebuild and offer hope to the flood-affected communities of Sarawak.
