What makes a university degree worthwhile? Beyond academic qualifications, its value also lies in the opportunities students pursue, the experiences they gain, and how they prepare for life after graduation. This question formed the central theme of “Is This Degree Worth It?”, the First-Year Starter Programme organised by the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development (FCSHD), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).

Held on 8 October 2026 at the Lecture Hall, Central Teaching Facilities 2 (CTF2), the programme brought together approximately 440 students, particularly those from the first and second intakes. The initiative encouraged students to look beyond academic requirements and consider how their choices and involvement throughout university could shape their future opportunities.

A key highlight was a sharing session featuring Tan Aik Hua, a Cognitive Science graduate, and Nazrul Aiman, a Protégé at the Office of the Deputy Dean (Student Affairs and Alumni), FCSHD, under the Maltimur Aktif Unggul Graduate Scheme. Moderated by Hakimi, a first-year Human Resource Development (HRD) student, the session offered perspectives from different stages of the academic and professional journey.

The discussion highlighted that career pathways are not always linear and that professional direction can evolve through experience, continuous learning, and exposure to new opportunities. For students still exploring their interests and aspirations, the session offered a practical reminder that career decisions need not be fully determined during their first year. Instead, university provides opportunities to make informed choices as their understanding of their disciplines and the working world develops.

The programme also emphasised the importance of connecting academic knowledge with practical experience. Participation in student organisations, leadership activities, community engagement, and industry exposure can strengthen communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and other transferable skills. Such experiences complement formal education and help students recognise how their academic disciplines relate to professional and societal needs.

Ultimately, “Is This Degree Worth It?” encouraged students to take an active role in shaping the value of their education. A degree provides an academic foundation, but how students apply their knowledge, pursue opportunities, and respond to challenges can influence what they gain from their university years.

Through the First-Year Starter Programme, FCSHD reaffirmed its commitment to preparing graduates who are academically competent, adaptable, and ready to contribute to their professions and communities. The programme offered first-year students a starting point for approaching their education with a clearer sense of purpose and responsibility.
