KOTA SAMARAHAN, SARAWAK, 14 July 2026 – The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) successfully organised a half-day research workshop titled From Concept to Publication: Navigating Medical Research.
The event, which drew over 50 enthusiastic participants, aimed to empower medical researchers, academics, and students with essential skills for every stage of the research journey.
Prof Dr Ahmad Tirmizi bin Jobli, Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation), kicked off the workshop with welcoming remarks, encouraging participants to take the opportunity to enhance their research skills and knowledge. He also expressed his hope that more such events would be organised to motivate faculty members and students and strengthen their confidence in conducting research.
The workshop covered topics such as “Navigating the National Medical Research Register (NMRR) Application” by Dr Melissa Lim Siaw Han, “Medical and Research Ethics” by Prof Dr Mohammad Zulkarnaen bin Ahmad Narihan, and “Academic Writing and Publishing” by Prof Dr Cheah Whye Lian.
In addition, participants attended sessions on “Qualitative Research” by Dr Chen Ai Ling and “Ethical and Legal Challenges in Clinical Studies” by Assoc Prof Dr Dayang Suhana binti Abg. Madzhi.
The highlight of the day was the soft launch of the book Health and Heritage: Unveiling the Dayak Community’s Journey Through Nutrition and Well-being in Sarawak. Edited by Prof Dr Cheah Whye Lian and Dr Ayu Akida Abdul Rashid, the publication sheds light on the unique nutritional and health experiences of the Dayak community.
The soft launch celebrated the collaborative efforts of the many authors and contributors dedicated to preserving and documenting this important aspect of Sarawak’s heritage.
Written in an accessible, non-academic style, the book aims to appeal to a broad readership from diverse backgrounds.
