Kuching, Sarawak – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) proudly concluded the second edition of the Borneo Mathematics Camp (BorMaC 2.0), a transformative program dedicated to inspiring and empowering young minds to explore the practical applications of mathematics.

Held from 13th to 16th January 2025, BorMaC 2.0 built on the success of its inaugural edition, which took place from 26th to 30th August 2023, co-organized with PERSAMA (Persatuan Sains Matematik Malaysia).

This year’s camp, hosted by UNIMAS’s Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Sarawak Bidayuh Graduates Association, brought together 80 Form 1 and Form 2 students from 26 schools across Kuching and Kota Samarahan, many of whom face challenges in mathematics.

BorMaC was designed to build students’ confidence and skills in mathematics while fostering a vision for higher education.

The program aims to equip students with the tools to pursue their passions and gain the ticket to enter university, demonstrating that mastering mathematics can open doors to countless opportunities.

The closing ceremony was graced by Tuan Adana Haji Jed, Permanent Secretary of MEITD, and representatives from the Sarawak Bidayuh Graduates Association.

The event highlighted the camp’s impact on inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers, innovators, and future university students.

Under the theme “Applying Mathematics to the Real World: Where Numbers Come to Life!”, BorMaC 2.0 featured interactive activities such as COVID-19 modeling, binomial distribution applications, 3D modeling, and data visualization.

These sessions demonstrated the practical role of mathematics in industries like public health, technology, and beyond, making the subject more accessible and engaging for students.

Professor Dr. Jane Labadin, Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT), emphasized UNIMAS’s commitment to STEM education and its role in shaping future leaders.

She highlighted the overwhelming response to UNIMAS’s new Program Asasi Pengkomputeran, which expects 700 computer science students by October 2025—a 15% enrollment increase.

Professor Dr. Labadin encouraged participants to see mathematics as more than just a subject but as a gateway to higher education and a tool to pursue their dreams.

“Mathematics is not just about numbers; it’s about solving problems, driving innovation, and changing the world. By mastering mathematics, you gain the ticket to enter university and pursue what you love. Whether it’s computer science, engineering, or any other field, mathematics will open doors for you,” she said.

The success of BorMaC 2.0 was made possible by the collaborative efforts of MEITD, the Sarawak Bidayuh Graduates Association, and UNIMAS’s Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT).

Building on the success of BorMaC 2023, which brought together 79 students from Kuching, Kota Samarahan, and Padawan, BorMaC 2025 continued to foster curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for mathematics.

The program showcased mathematics as a powerful tool for solving real-world challenges, inspiring students to envision a future where they can make meaningful contributions to society.
