Kota Samarahan – The Faculty of Engineering UNIMAS on 20 January 2026 served as a hub for international knowledge exchange, hosting 18 students from Jiangsu Normal University Kewen College, China. As part of the International Students Mobility Programme, the students participated in a specialized module titled “Data-Driven Environmental Monitoring & Energy-Saving Solutions” held at the faculty’s dedicated STEM Room.
The program, coordinated by Dr. Ervina bt Junaidi (Deputy Dean of Student Affairs & Alumni) and organized by UBS under the coordination of Dr. Connie Lim Keh Nie, aimed to provide international participants with practical insights into modern sustainability.
The session was led by expert facilitators from the UNIMAS High Voltage & Technology (HiVET) Research Group, including AP Ir. Ts. Dr. Yanuar Zulardiansyah Arief, Mdm Nazreen bt Junaidi, and Ts. Shirley Rufus.
The session focused on the critical role of environmental monitoring in the face of climate change and rising energy demands. Participants explored how buildings consume significant energy and the philosophy that “we cannot improve what we do not measure”. Key highlights included Data Fundamentals: Students identified various types of environmental data, such as temperature, humidity, air quality, and energy consumption.
The 18 participants were divided into six groups to tackle the Smart Campus & Home Challenge. During these 30-minute interactive sessions, students proposed data-driven solutions for real-world scenarios, identifying which sensors were needed and which actions would best save energy.
The program concluded with a group sharing session where students reflected on how these systems can reduce waste, lower costs, and support global sustainability. Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many students noted that the program was not only “fun” but also provided highly “useful” techniques regarding energy-saving solutions that they could apply in their daily lives. By the end of the day, the message was clear: data enables better decisions, and anyone can start building a simpler, energy-efficient future.
