The Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) recently played host to a groundbreaking event aimed at fostering data science expertise among the region’s youth.

The ASEAN Data Science Enablement (DSE) Session, organized by Persatuan Teknologi Maklumat (PERTEKMA) and spearheaded by Avinaash Loganathan, took place on April 27th, 2024, drawing together a diverse cohort of students and professionals, eager to delve into the world of data analytics and application development.

In a collaborative effort involving the UTP-ASEAN Student Association and The Asia Foundation, the six-hour workshop saw 120 participants from UNIMAS, UITM, and international institutions come together to explore the transformative potential of data science.

Hailing from Jakarta, Indonesia, the Project Manager from the ASEAN Foundation lent expertise and guidance to the session, enriching the experience for all involved.

The event kicked off with a spirited opening ceremony at Teaching Lab 2, FCSIT, UNIMAS, which was also live-streamed to other venues, ensuring broader accessibility. Notable dignitaries in attendance included Ilan Asqolani, Project Manager for ASEAN Foundation-SAP Joint Initiatives; Associate Professor Dr Kartinah Zen, Dean of FCSIT; Dr. Fatihah Ramli, Deputy Dean of Undergraduate Studies; and Professor Dr Jane Labadin, Director of the Centre of Data Science at UNIMAS.

Professor Dr Labadin took the stage to introduce the Centre of Data Science and shed light on its impactful projects, setting the tone for an engaging and insightful day ahead.

Throughout the workshop, participants were immersed in hands-on activities designed to hone their data analytics skills and familiarize them with cutting-edge tools such as SAP Analytics Cloud and SAP Build Apps.

The interactive sessions provided invaluable learning experiences, empowering attendees to harness the power of data in driving innovation and problem-solving.

With a focus on practical application, the workshop aimed to equip participants with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly data-driven digital economy.

The ASEAN Data Science Enablement Session at UNIMAS underscores the university’s commitment to technological innovation and preparing future data science leaders.

By bringing together diverse talents and expertise, the workshop has not only expanded horizons but also laid the groundwork for continued collaboration and growth in the dynamic field of data science.

As participants depart with newfound skills and inspiration, the ripple effects of this transformative event are sure to be felt far beyond the walls of UNIMAS.
