On the serene evening of 17 Ramadan 1445H, corresponding to 28 March 2024, the grounds of UNIMAS witnessed the vibrant celebration of Sungkey @ The Square, a cherished tradition eagerly awaited by the UNIMAS community during the holy month of Ramadan.

The essence of Sungkey, a Sarawakian term for breaking fast, transcended mere culinary indulgence as students and staff alike gathered at the Chancellory Bucida Square, each bearing a cornucopia of homemade and store-bought delicacies to share with friends and colleagues. The scene was a testament to the rich tapestry of cultures within the university, with hundreds of delectable dishes adorning the communal tables, inviting all to partake in the spirit of unity and camaraderie.

Under the sprawling Sarawak sunset sky, attendees assembled their own mats, creating a colorful mosaic of diversity as they sat together to enjoy the culinary delights and engage in heartfelt conversations. The ambiance was further enlivened by captivating performances from talented students, infusing the gathering with an infectious energy and joy.

What truly distinguished Sungkey @ The Square was the heartwarming display of inclusivity and solidarity. Regardless of race or religion, students and staff came together to share not only food but also laughter, stories, and cherished moments. The act of breaking fast together, amidst the harmonious blend of flavors and cultures, became a powerful symbol of unity and mutual respect.

As YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Chairman of UNIMAS, YBhg Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS, and other board directors mingled with the attendees, the event blossomed into a celebration of diversity, fostering a sense of belonging and community among all present.

In a world often marred by division, Sungkey @ The Square served as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the transformative power of inclusivity and shared experiences. As the evening drew to a close, hearts were full, spirits lifted, and memories forged, leaving an indelible mark on the collective soul of the UNIMAS community. Truly, Sungkey @ The Square epitomized the beauty of cultural exchange and the joy of coming together as one family, united in faith and friendship.
