Kuching, Sarawak, April 1, 2024 – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), in collaboration with Yayasan Hijau Malaysia (YHM), hosted a talk, “Pathways to Plastic Neutrality: Collaborative Actions and Innovative Solutions,” on April 1, 2024, at Dewan Zamrud, Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR), UNIMAS, Sarawak. This event brought together leading voices in environmental sustainability to address the pressing issue of plastic waste and served as a dynamic platform for dialogue, learning, and action, urging participants to contribute to a sustainable future.

The event featured a panel discussion with YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and leading experts, including Mr. Simon Christopher, Founder of BluHope NGO, Professor Dr. Rafeah Wahi, from the Faculty of Science and Technology, UNIMAS and Mr. Boyd Jouman, Low-carbon Development expert at QCP Consulting who delved into various aspects of environmental sustainability, providing a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand and proposing actionable solutions for achieving plastic neutrality.


Additionally, the event showcased UNIMAS’s ongoing initiatives in plastic waste management, particularly highlighting the university’s activities at Kampung Bako, Sarawak. These activities demonstrated practical applications of plastic waste reduction and sustainable management practices, contributing to the broader discourse on environmental sustainability. The event fostered a productive dialogue among participants, offering innovative solutions and emphasising the importance of partnerships and community engagement in the journey towards a sustainable future.

The event was officiated by YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and attended by UNIMAS Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit and Shahrinaz Maamor, Chief Operating Officer of Yayasan Hijau Malaysia.
