The Program Kemahiran Kampung Angkat MADANI (KAM): Bengkel Asas Gunting Rambut Kampung Semera was successfully implemented under the Projek KAM UNIMAS initiative, funded by the Ministry of Finance through the UNIMAS Sustainability Centre. The program, which took place in Kampung Semera, Sadong Jaya, was designed to empower the local community, particularly the asnaf, unemployed youth, and B40 households, by equipping them with basic haircutting skills that could be immediately applied as a source of income and self-employment and for those who intend to enhance their skills can later further advance into professional stage.
Carrying the theme “Langkah Pertama ke Arah Kemahiran Profesional dan Melahirkan Belia Berkemahiran serta Berdikari,” the project was led by Dr. Sharifah Sabrina Syed Ali and ran over two weekends, from 26-27 July to 2-3 August 2025. The program not only introduced fundamental haircutting techniques but also incorporated elements of self-development, communication, entrepreneurship, marketing, and financial literacy. By combining technical skills with entrepreneurial knowledge, the workshop offered participants a holistic platform to develop their confidence and independence. Each participant was also provided with a complete basic barber kit to support immediate skill application, ensuring that what was learned in the sessions could be put into practice right away.

The four-day workshop was structured to include both demonstrations by professional speakers from UNIMAS and the intensive hands-on practice by the professional trainers, appointed vendor from Yayasan Kepimpinan Al Bait (YKAB). This approach proved to be highly effective, as participants not only learned how to handle haircutting tools safely but also gained the opportunity to practice directly under supervision. The experience created an atmosphere of encouragement and discovery, with many participants expressing excitement about their new found abilities and for those who already acquired the skills from working in the same field.
The impact of the workshop was significant. Moreover, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting the expertise of the trainers, the clarity of the teaching methods, and the practical value of the program. Many participants also expressed their gratitude to UNIMAS for creating such an impactful opportunity.

Beyond the personal gains, the program also nurtured a strong sense of togetherness within the community. This community project organized under UNIMAS initiative, has grown into a platform for collaboration, where residents not only exchange haircutting experiences but also support local entrepreneurship by promoting small goods and services through a dedicated WhatsApp group created by the leader of this project. Encouragingly, conversations have already begun about establishing a community barbershop, a step that would not only boost local economic activity but also create a shared entrepreneurial venture for the people of Kampung Semera.
In essence, the Bengkel Asas Gunting Rambut Kampung Semera has demonstrated how skill-based programs can have a transformative effect on both individuals and communities. By providing structured training, practical experience, and the necessary tools, the program has created a pathway for income generation, professional development, and greater self-reliance. It has also strengthened the bond between UNIMAS and the local community, in line with the broader goals of the Kampung Angkat MADANI initiative.
Ultimately, this program stands as a successful example of social responsibility in action. It has empowered individuals with valuable skills, reduced dependency on unstable job markets, and inspired participants to pursue entrepreneurship and independence. More than just a workshop, it has sown the seeds of sustainable community development and left a lasting impact on the socio-economic well-being of Kampung Semera.
