The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), continued its commitment to community engagement through the Kem Kepimpinan Pengawas SMK Sg Tapang 2025, held on 23 August 2025 at SMK Sg Tapang, Kuching. The one-day programme, running from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm, gathered 84 student prefects from Form 1 to Form 4 to strengthen their leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.

The camp was officiated by the Principal of SMK Sg Tapang and attended by the school management team. It was jointly facilitated by nine lecturers from FSSH – Dr Khalid Zanudin, Dr Tracy Peter Samat, Dr Leha Saliman, Dr Nor Rafidah Saidon, Dayangku Norasyikin Pengiran Tejuddin, Claudia Jiton, Dr Mohd Khairul Nabil Mohd Nor Azan, Joan Sim Jo Jo, and Josfirin Uding Anak Rangga together with five (5) dedicated teachers from SMK Sg Tapang.

Leadership Through Action-Based Learning

The programme was divided into three engaging slots:

  • Slot 1: Effective Leadership and the Role of Leaders (facilitated by Dr Khalid Zanudin)
    Activities such as War Cry, Self-Reflection, and a team quiz tested creativity, built confidence, and encouraged students to appreciate the qualities of effective leadership.
  • Slot 2: Communication and Teamwork (facilitated by Dr Leha Saliman)
    Interactive activities like Khabar Angin and I’m Not Single highlighted the importance of clear communication, critical thinking, and collective problem-solving in achieving shared goals.
  • Slot 3: Group Dynamics and Problem-Solving (facilitated by Dr Mohd Khairul Nabil Mohd Nor Azan)
    Activity like Jambatan Kami challenged participants to think strategically and collaborate to complete innovative group tasks.

Cultivating Future Leaders

Throughout the sessions, students demonstrated enthusiasm, resilience, and creativity, while facilitators guided them to reflect on key leadership values such as responsibility, discipline, teamwork, and empathy.

The camp highlighted FSSH UNIMAS’s vision of being “A Partner for Social Change” by empowering young leaders at the school level to take on roles with confidence and integrity. It also strengthened university-school collaboration in fostering holistic student development aligned with leadership and nation-building values.
