A two-day STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) outreach programme was successfully held at SK Tringgus, Bau, Sarawak from 1st to 2nd July 2025, under the inspiring theme “Tringgus Jak Berami Katik.” The programme brought together one lecturer and 45 students from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Energy Sustainability and 7 students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Together, they formed the Yellowhippo STEM Squad which served as a dedicated team responsible for organizing and leading the programme.
The programme officially began on 1st July 2025 with welcoming remarks from Program Director Mohammad Muzzamil bin Abdullah, Programme Advisor Dr Nazeri Abdul Rahman, and the school headmistress, Mdm Francisca Sandra Anak Andrew Pero. Their speeches highlight the importance of STEM education and the spirit of collaboration that the event aimed to foster. Following the speeches, the participants were divided into groups for an ice-breaking session. Each group was assigned a facilitator who guided them through introductions and interactive activities designed to encourage communication, teamwork, and mutual understanding.
The afternoon session featured the launch of six interactive STEM activity stations along with a dedicated Kiddy STEM station for younger participants. The highlight of this session was a lively paper plane competition where students creatively applied basic aerodynamics and engineering concepts to design, build, and test their planes for flight performance. Following the STEM activities, participants took part in a series of sports games that aimed at fostering teamwork and adding a spirit of enjoyment to the day’s learning experience.
In the evening, Dr Nazeri Abdul Rahman captivated the students with an inspiring sharing session on the value of pursuing higher education in STEM with a special focus of opportunities at UNIMAS. Additionally, the evening’s program also included three entertaining gimmicks performed by three selected students from SK Tringgus which are kedondong-powered battery, vinegar-generated battery and electrocoagulation treatment. The day ended on a high note with “English Sketsa” where students performed fun and creative skits that brought laughter, teamwork, and English communication skills to life.
Kicking off on 2nd July 2025, the second day began with a gotong-royong session where UNIMAS students worked together to clean and organize the school’s sport storeroom. The program officially ended with a closing ceremony that included awards, souvenirs, and closing speeches from the organizing committee. Overall, the Tringgus Jak Berami Katik STEM Volunteerism Programme was a successful event which delivers meaningful experiences, new friendships as well as lasting inspiration for all who took part.
