The Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development (FCSHD) held its athlete screening event, Saringan Juara FCSHD, on 26 and 27 April 2025. This two-day programme served as the official selection platform for students aspiring to represent the faculty at KESUMAS 2025, a university-wide sports festival organised by the Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (Student Representative Council).

Registration for the event closed on 25 April, with students across all faculty programmes encouraged to participate. The initiative underscored the importance of sport not merely as competition but as an essential means of developing qualities integral to both personal growth and academic success. The enthusiastic response reflected students’ recognition of sport as a vital arena for cultivating discipline, resilience, and leadership.

Screenings took place at various venues, including the Cempaka College Sports Court, Arena Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, and Lab 3 at FCSHD. Sessions ran daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., providing a comprehensive opportunity for participants to demonstrate their athletic skills alongside essential attributes such as teamwork, commitment, and perseverance. The conduct and spirit displayed throughout the event exemplified the faculty’s commitment to holistic student development.

The range of sports represented reflected both traditional and contemporary student interests, including football, futsal, netball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, ping pong, and bola jaring. In addition to these, competitive e-sports such as Mobile Legends and PUBG featured prominently in the screening process. These digital sports demand strategic thinking, quick decision-making, and effective communication, skills that align closely with leadership and cognitive competencies valued in academic and professional settings. Including e-sports in the selection reflects FCSHD’s recognition of evolving forms of competition and their role in fostering teamwork and resilience among students.

Saringan Juara FCSHD extended beyond athletic selection to serve as a forum for nurturing values that underpin academic and professional excellence. Through sport, students develop resilience, collaboration skills, and ethical conduct—qualities essential to their roles as future professionals and community leaders. With selections finalised, the selected athletes will commence focused training for KESUMAS 2025, prepared not only physically but also mentally for the challenges ahead.

The closing ceremony provided a fitting conclusion, where the Dean of FCSHD presented certificates of participation to all athletes. This recognition acknowledged the dedication and sportsmanship demonstrated, reinforcing the faculty’s emphasis on unity, integrity, and excellence. The Dean commended the students for embodying these principles, reflecting the integration of sporting spirit within the academic ethos of FCSHD.

As the faculty anticipates the upcoming competition, it expresses gratitude to all participants, organisers, volunteers, and supporters. Their collective efforts uphold FCSHD’s reputation for excellence in both academics and sports. United in purpose, the faculty continues to champion character development through sport, preparing students to excel in all dimensions of their university experience and beyond.
