Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, 7 MAY 2025 – The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) conducted the second session of its FMHS Research Cluster Series Workshop 2025 on 7 May, focusing on “Basic Statistics Using SPSS.”
Held at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), the full-day workshop gathered 40 participants, aiming to support health researchers and postgraduate students in improving their statistical skills.
The event was jointly organised by the Postgraduate Education Committee (PGMED) and the Medical Education Unit. Participants included postgraduate students from various programmes, lecturers from FMHS and doctors from the Sarawak General Hospital.
The workshop was facilitated by Professor Dr Md Mizanur Rahman, a public health and biostatistics expert with a PhD in Statistics. He guided participants through key statistical concepts using a combination of theory and real-life examples. Topics included types of data, measurement levels, and an overview of statistical tools such as SPSS, R, JAMOVI, and JASP.
Participants also learned how to clean and organise data, perform descriptive analyses, and apply basic statistical tests. A practical feature of the session was the use of participant information to create example datasets, allowing hands-on practice with immediate feedback.
At the end of the session, the Dean of FMHS, Professor Dr Asri Said, presented a certificate of appreciation to Professor Mizanur as a gesture of thanks.

The FMHS Research Cluster Series is part of the Faculty’s continued effort to strengthen research capabilities in the health and medical sciences. More workshops are planned in the coming months.
