KOTA SAMARAHAN, Jan 6, 2025 — The Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development (FCSHD) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) inaugurated the academic year 2025 with an innovative exhibition for the course KMF1014: Introduction to Cognitive Science. This event, which replaced the traditional final examination, served as a platform for implementing alternative assessment methods aimed at fostering deeper learning, creativity, and practical skill development among first-year students.

Alternative assessments, characterized by their emphasis on active engagement, critical thinking, and real-world application, provide an effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing student learning outcomes. By moving away from conventional memorization-based assessments, this approach supports the cultivation of transferable skills, such as problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation, which are essential for success in both academic and professional contexts.

The exhibition featured participation from over 600 students, who collectively showcased more than 100 interactive booths. These displays covered a broad spectrum of cognitive science topics, incorporating models, games, and demonstrations to engage visitors and facilitate an enriched understanding of the subject matter. The event was conducted in three sessions, each evaluated by a designated faculty member—Mr. Mohd Hafizan, Dr. Nurul Hanim, and Dr. Siti Atiyah—ensuring rigorous and comprehensive assessment of student contributions.

A significant highlight of the day was the official launch ceremony, officiated by Dr. Hana Hamidi, Dean of FCSHD. In her address, Dr. Hana underscored the importance of alternative assessment methods in fostering meaningful educational experiences. “This course extends beyond mere acquisition of syllabus content. It challenges students to explore their potential and to engage in the creation of impactful learning experiences,” she remarked. Her address emphasized the role of such assessments in nurturing holistic development and preparing students to meet the demands of an evolving global landscape.

One of the most notable moments of the event was the presentation of a handcrafted brain model, enhanced with labelled regions delivered via a remote-controlled car. This innovative and interactive display captivated attendees, reflecting the creativity and ingenuity fostered by the alternative assessment framework.

The KMF1014 Exhibition Day highlighted the potential of alternative assessments in promoting deeper learning and critical engagement. By providing students with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, collaborative contexts, the event demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach in achieving educational objectives. Moreover, it reaffirmed UNIMAS’s commitment to delivering a high-quality, student-centred educational experience that equips graduates with the competencies necessary for academic and professional excellence.
