On 6 November 2024, students enrolled in KNS4193 Water Resources Engineering participated in a site visit to the detention pond at Institut Kemajuan Desa (INFRA) Sarawak Branch, Kota Samarahan. Nearly 70 students attended the visit to observe the design and function of an existing dry detention pond, a key component of urban stormwater management infrastructure, commonly referred to as a SUStoM (Sustainable Stormwater Management) facility. The course includes discussions on SUStoM facility designs, addressing and assessing their roles in urban hydrology.
We extend our gratitude to the Head of INFRA Sarawak Branch, Puan Dayang Monalizawati binti Abang Ismail, for graciously hosting our visit.
The site visit provided valuable insights, exposing students to practical applications of stormwater management facilities. The dry detention pond demonstrated the “control at source” approach, effectively reducing peak runoff and serving as a flood mitigation system.
