4 November 2025 — Seven students from the Plant Science Programme (PLANTERS), Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), joined seven students from Zen University, Japan, in a collaborative rainforest reforestation programme held at Sabal Forest Reserve, Simunjan.

The event was co-organised by the Japan–Malaysia Association (JMA) in collaboration with the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) and supported by local community members from the surrounding villages. The joint activity provided a platform for students from both universities to collaborate in restoring the rainforest ecosystem, while deepening their understanding of environmental conservation and sustainable land management.

During the one-day programme, participants planted native tree species under the guidance of Forest Department Sarawak officers and local community members. The reforestation exercise introduced students to the ecological significance of forest rehabilitation, land preparation for Forest Landscape Restoration, and species selection in promoting forest recovery and climate resilience. The experience allowed participants to appreciate the vital role of forest ecosystems in addressing global environmental challenges and promoting sustainability for future generations.

Beyond the tree planting activities, the programme fostered friendship and cultural exchange between Malaysian and Japanese students through interactive sessions and group discussions. Participants shared their university experiences and cultural practices while engaging with members of the local community to learn about traditional forest knowledge and local conservation efforts. The event became a meaningful cross-cultural learning experience that strengthened mutual understanding and respect between the two groups.

“It was an unforgettable experience to work together in such a beautiful natural setting. We learned not only about reforestation but also about teamwork and the value of preserving nature,” said Hector Favian anak Dominic, student representative from the Plant Science Programme, FRST, UNIMAS.

Ryo Tanaka, student representative from Zen University, added, “We were touched by the hospitality of the local people and impressed by how they care for their forest. This trip has given us new inspiration to continue learning about environmental protection.”

The Japan–Malaysia Association, which has long promoted educational and cultural exchange between the two nations, expressed appreciation to UNIMAS and the Forest Department Sarawak for their support and collaboration. The event successfully combined scientific learning, community involvement, and intercultural understanding, echoing the spirit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that emphasize partnerships, education, and environmental sustainability.

At the end of the programme, all participating students received certificates of participation, presented by the Japan–Malaysia Association, in recognition of their contributions to the rainforest restoration efforts at Sabal Forest Reserve.
