KOTA SAMARAHAN, 9 FEBRUARY 2026 – The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), today received an academic delegation from Soegijapranata Catholic University (SCU), Semarang, as part of an international field study programme.
The group, comprising 42 students from the Master of Health Law programme (Cohort Batch 42) and faculty members, visited the campus as part of their Kuliah Kerja Lapangan (academic field study). The visit aimed to provide the postgraduate students with practical insights into the legal and regulatory frameworks governing the Malaysian healthcare sector.
During the session, Associate Professor Dr Dayang Suhana binti Abg. Madzhi provided an extensive overview of recent developments in health law and healthcare policy within Malaysia, offering the delegation a comprehensive look at the nation’s evolving legislative landscape.
This was followed by a briefing from Dr Lim Siong Hee, who addressed the digitalisation of healthcare services. Dr Lim’s presentation focused specifically on the current regulatory frameworks and the institutional readiness of the Malaysian medical system as it adapts to technological advancements.
Following the briefings, the master’s students participated in a focused discussion session. The exchange allowed the Indonesian delegation to explore specific medicolegal themes, including patient rights, medical liability, and the legal challenges associated with healthcare delivery in both rural and urban settings, including border community health, especially in Sarawak.
Associate Professor Dr Marcella Elwina Simandjuntak, Head of the Health Law Master’s Programme at SCU’s Faculty of Law and Communication, emphasised that the visit was a vital component of the students’ academic curriculum. She noted that the session provided the cohort with an opportunity to gain practical insights into Malaysian healthcare governance, alongside the interprofessional approaches to patient safety utilised within the local clinical environment.
Hosting the delegation facilitates a valuable exchange of knowledge regarding health law and policy matters in Southeast Asia. The visit concluded with an interactive session, after which the delegation continued their itinerary. The insights gained are expected to assist the SCU students in their ongoing research and postgraduate studies upon their return to Indonesia.
