Excitement filled the air at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) as students from all over the country came together for ROBOCON Malaysia 2025. Representing Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) was Team Hornbill Tech, made up of 12 enthusiastic students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The competition, held from 17 to 19 June, followed the theme “Team Effort, Ultimate Success.” Teams were challenged to build two robots that could play basketball i.e., dribbling, passing, shooting, and even dunking the ball. It was a fun yet challenging test of teamwork, creativity, and engineering skills.

Team Hornbill Tech rose to the challenge, building both an attacking and a defending robot from scratch. The students worked hard for weeks to ensure their robots could move, pass, and shoot with precision. Although they did not make it to the final round, their performance was full of spirit and determination. Their robots were innovative, and their teamwork truly stood out.

The team’s journey would not have been possible without strong support. Lecturers and technical staff from both faculties provided invaluable guidance, while the faculty deans, the Centre for Student Development, and the university leadership, especially TNCHEPA, offered tremendous encouragement and assistance throughout the process.

ROBOCON is more than just a competition. It gives students a chance to apply real-world skills from building and coding to solving problems and working in a team. It also reflects UNIMAS’ commitment to nurturing future-ready graduates who are not only technically skilled but also resilient, innovative, and collaborative.

As the event ends, Team Hornbill Tech returns home proud, inspired, and ready to keep learning and growing. Their journey shows that with teamwork, passion, and the right support, anything is possible.
