In line with its commitment to producing future-ready graduates, the Faculty of Engineering at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) successfully conducted the Industrial Awareness Training Program on 8–9 May 2025. Open to all final-year engineering students, this initiative was a strategic collaboration with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), the IR4.0 Prototyping Lab, and Akar Indah Engineering. It aimed to equip students with critical Industry 4.0 competencies.

The two-day hybrid program provided exposure to key topics such as machine retrofitting, IoT integration, smart monitoring, and industrial safety. Day 1 was conducted online via Webex, where students participated in a series of awareness modules. The morning sessions introduced the fundamentals of machine retrofitting and the role of IoT and smart technologies in driving Industry 4.0 automation. In the afternoon, students received basic safety training related to mechanical and electrical systems, with an emphasis on hazard identification and workplace safety standards.

On Day 2, students gathered physically at the Retrofit Lab, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, for hands-on experience. They engaged in practical demonstrations, including sensor installation, smart system setup, and retrofitting exercises. The immersive session enabled participants to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real lab environment, deepening their understanding of how automation and safety protocols are implemented in actual industrial settings.

This training program proved to be a valuable enhancement to the students’ academic journey. By integrating technical knowledge with practical applications, the program not only boosted their confidence but also improved their career readiness. Many participants shared that they gained clearer insights into the digital transformation of industries and the skills required to thrive in future engineering roles.

Professor Ir. Dr. Abdullah, one of the facilitators, highlighted the importance of such programs as part of a holistic engineering education. “This program is a strategic value-add to our students’ degree programs. It boosts their confidence and competence in applying modern engineering solutions,” he said.

The Industrial Awareness Training Program reflects the Faculty’s continued efforts to strengthen industry-academia collaboration and prepare students for dynamic, technology-driven workplaces. As UNIMAS continues to embed practical exposure and innovation into its curriculum, initiatives like this reinforce its vision of producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also agile, skilled, and industry-ready.
