BINTULU, 5–6 May 2025 – Over 100 aspiring chemists from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) embarked on a transformative industrial visit to Bintulu, Sarawak, gaining firsthand exposure to the practical applications of chemistry in Malaysia’s thriving industrial sector.
Organized by the Chemistry Program under the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, the visit brought together 102 third-year students as part of their coursework for STK31083 (Industrial Inorganic Chemistry) and STK31093 (Industrial Organic Chemistry). The trip was led and accompanied by Associate Professor Dr. Tay Meng Guan and Dr. Muhammad Abdurrahman Munir, whose guidance ensured a seamless and impactful learning experience.
During the two-day visit, students toured five leading industrial facilities—Pertama Ferroalloys Sdn. Bhd., Samalaju Sarawak Water, Bintulu Sarawak Water, SOP Edible Oil, and SD Guthrie International—where they were exposed to real-time operations, modern production technologies, and sustainable practices in the chemical and resource-based industries.
This hands-on learning opportunity allowed students to bridge classroom theory with real-world practice, enhancing their understanding of industrial processes, safety protocols, and chemical applications in various sectors. More than just an academic requirement, the visit ignited professional inspiration and opened students’ eyes to potential career pathways in the chemical industry.
The successful visit reflects UNIMAS’s commitment to experiential learning and industry collaboration, equipping graduates with both knowledge and industry readiness. The experience broadened students’ perspectives and strengthened the university’s ties with key industry players in Sarawak.
