Kota Samarahan, 25 February 2025 – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is making significant strides in advancing Malaysia’s Blue Economy, leveraging its expertise in marine conservation, fisheries, sustainable aquaculture, marine biotechnology, renewable energy, coastal management and environmental sustainability. With strong capabilities in marine biodiversity research, ecosystem restoration and climate resilience studies, UNIMAS continues to drive impactful solutions for Malaysia’s maritime and coastal industries. The university was recently invited to participate in the Stakeholder Engagement Session for the Malaysia Blue Economy Blueprint (MBEB), organized by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM).

The session, held at the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI), Kota Samarahan, aimed to gather expert input on the development of Malaysia’s first Blue Economy Blueprint, a national framework spearheaded by the Ministry of Economy. The year-long study (August 2024 – August 2025) focuses on strategic areas such as fisheries and aquaculture, coastal tourism, marine biotechnology and renewable energy.

UNIMAS’ Role in the MBEB Stakeholder Engagement

UNIMAS was represented by Prof. Dr. Mohd Azlan Jayasilan, Director of the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC), Prof. Dr. Ruhana Hassan, Professor at the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST), and Dr. Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Nasir, Deputy Director (Community Transformation), University Sustainability Centre (USC).

These distinguished representatives shared their insights on marine biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, climate adaptation, ocean governance and community-driven conservation efforts, highlighting UNIMAS’ research initiatives and engagement with local fishermen, aquaculture farmers, coastal communities, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.

UNIMAS’ Key Contributions to Malaysia’s Blue Economy

UNIMAS plays a crucial role in driving Malaysia’s Blue Economy by leveraging its expertise in marine biodiversity research, sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, and renewable energy. Through the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST) and Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation (IBEC), UNIMAS is actively engaged in marine biodiversity assessments, habitat restoration, and ecosystem monitoring, contributing to the conservation of endangered marine species and the development of marine protected areas.

The university also leads research in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, focusing on native fish breeding, innovative aquaculture techniques, and fisheries management to support food security and economic resilience. Its work in marine conservation and biodiversity includes mangrove restoration, coral reef protection, and pollution reduction to ensure the health of coastal ecosystems.

Additionally, UNIMAS champions community-based research and innovation, collaborating with local communities, indigenous groups, and fisheries cooperatives to promote sustainable fishing practices and sustainable marine resource management. Its research in ocean-based renewable energy, marine bioengineering, and seaweed cultivation aligns with Malaysia’s efforts to transition toward a low-carbon and circular economy.

Through its participation in the Malaysia Blue Economy Blueprint (MBEB) study, UNIMAS continues to strengthen its role as a key research institution, driving innovation, fostering partnerships, and supporting national policies for a sustainable and resilient Blue Economy in Sarawak. This commitment aligns with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) by promoting economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability through Blue Economy initiatives.

A National Vision for the Blue Economy

Sarawak, with its vast coastal and riverine ecosystems, holds immense potential in Malaysia’s Blue Economy. Through its participation in the MBEB study, UNIMAS is reinforcing its role as a key research institution supporting the sustainable development of marine resources.

The engagement session at TROPI provided a critical platform for policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to collaborate on shaping the future of Malaysia’s marine and coastal economy. UNIMAS is highly committed to advancing innovative research, strengthening community partnerships, and working closely with the government to foster a sustainable and resilient Blue Economy.
