The POLGOV AI-Driven Digital Design Challenge: From Theory to Clicks was successfully organised from 18 December 2024 to 10 January 2025. This online competition required participants to utilise various digital platforms, including Notion.so, Xtiles, Wix, and Google Sites. The program was guided by Dr Leha Anak Saliman, program co-ordinator for the Politics and Government Studies Programme, who served as the advisor.

The primary objective of this program was to enhance students’ experience with information technology in the field of Politics and Government Studies. Conducted entirely online, it encouraged participants to explore various web design platforms, equipping them with practical digital skills. Beyond exposing students to information technology, the program emphasized the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enrich their academic work, aligning with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As part of the program, participants were required to develop their own web designs using the selected platforms. Their innovative efforts were commendable, as they effectively leveraged information technology and AI as tools for creativity and problem-solving. This initiative is expected to nurture technological innovation and digital literacy among students.
To facilitate the submission and voting process for web designs, Google Forms were used. Participants from each group shared the link to their respective web designs, thereby streamlining the voting process. A total of ten groups participated in the competition. Online voting was conducted by both students and lecturers to select the top three groups for first, second, and third place.

Dr. Leha Anak Saliman remarked, “This program has not only provided a unique platform for students in Politics and Government Studies to engage with cutting-edge technology, but it has also fostered creativity and innovation in digital design. The integration of tools such as Notion.so, Xtiles, Wix, and Google Sites has empowered students to translate theoretical concepts into practical applications, thereby enhancing their understanding of the digital landscape in which they will operate. This program is more than just a challenge, it is an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and build a portfolio that showcases their capabilities. I encourage all students to embrace this chance to learn, grow, and innovate. The skills and insights gained through this program will undoubtedly serve them well in their future careers in politics and government.”

Additionally, Fedrick Lansam Anak Jeli, the Program Director, shared his views on the significance of the initiative: “This event is a commendable initiative that allows participants to enhance their proficiency in information technology and artificial intelligence (AI). AI has become a key component of global development, permeating various industries, particularly in academia and education. By implementing this AI-driven event for political students, we aim to ensure that they not only focus on politics but also broaden their understanding of innovations, information technology, and, primarily, artificial intelligence. Furthermore, this Program will help participants develop the critical thinking skills necessary for aligning political development with the rapid technological advancements we are witnessing today. Therefore, I hope that this program can be continued in the future.”
A participant, Gilbert Ganing Anak Peter, shared his insights: “I am pleased to have been involved in this competition, which has provided a valuable opportunity. The initiative successfully achieved its goal of enhancing participants’ digital literacy, particularly through the web design challenge among POLGOV students. The active engagement and enthusiasm from participants were commendable, highlighting the relevance of digital empowerment in today’s world. Overall, this Program made a meaningful impact by equipping attendees with critical digital skills and fostering awareness of the digital landscape. It is inspiring to see how initiatives like this can empower individuals to navigate the ever-evolving digital world with confidence. I look forward to seeing future iterations with enhancements that further elevate its impact.”
To celebrate the winners’ exceptional achievements in web design, a prize-giving ceremony was held on January 10, 2025. The team Another Level of Innovators claimed first place, followed by Group Five in second and Kubis in third in the POLGOV AI-Driven Digital Design Challenge: From Theory to Clicks. As a token of appreciation for their creativity and innovation, each winning team received certificates and hampers. This event showcased the growing importance of digital proficiency, highlighting how artificial intelligence and information technology can be effectively applied in academic and professional settings.
