Kota Samarahan, 19 December 2024 — The Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development (FCSHD) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) hosted an inspiring inaugural lecture today by Professor Dr. Chen Chwen Jen at DeTAR PUTRA, UNIMAS. The lecture focused on the revolutionary impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in learning, a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant in today’s fast-evolving educational landscape.
In her lecture, Professor Dr. Chen, a leading expert in Learning Design and Technology, explored how AI is reshaping teaching and learning through intelligent tutoring systems, personalised learning, and content generation. She emphasized the potential of AI to make education more engaging and meaningful for both learners and educators.
“AI is not just a tool; it is a partner that can enrich human cognition, build expansive knowledge networks, and transform the way we approach education,” said Professor Dr. Chen. Her new book, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Learning, was also launched during the event. The book delves into the synergy between artificial and human cognition, offering strategies for educators to embrace AI in their teaching practices.
One highlight of the event was a demonstration of LearnSphere, a cutting-edge AI learning application developed by Associate Professor Dr. Teh Chee Siong and Cognitive Science student Tan Aik Hua. LearnSphere is an innovative Large Language Model (LLM)-based system designed to operate offline, ensuring data privacy while providing intelligent, contextual assistance to learners.
“This application showcases how AI can be used effectively even in environments with limited internet access, reflecting the forward-thinking approach of our Cognitive Science program,” Professor Dr. Chen noted.
The lecture also addressed critical future trends in AI-driven education, such as the rise of personalized AI tutors and the evolving role of educators as “prompt engineers.” Professor Dr. Chen highlighted the importance of equipping learners with essential skills and ethical practices to work alongside AI, preparing them for real-world challenges and fostering creativity.
The event culminated with the official launch of Professor Dr. Chen’s book by YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Chairman of the UNIMAS Board of Directors. The ceremony was also attended by YBhg Prof. Dr. Fitri Suraya Mohamad Hapni Joblie, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International), YBhg Prof. Ir. Dr. Siti Noor Linda Taib, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation), YBhg Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr Al-Khalid Hj Othman, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), YBrs Associate Professor Dr. Amalia Madihie, FCSHD Dean, other Deans, Directors, representatives from public and private sectors, UNIMAS academics, and students.
Adding a personal touch to the event, Professor Dr. Chen was joined by her husband, mother, sibling, and children, who were there to celebrate this significant milestone in her illustrious academic career. Their presence added warmth and a sense of family pride to the occasion.
Professor Dr. Chen’s lecture serves as a timely reminder of the transformative power of AI in education and its potential to prepare future innovators. It also underscores UNIMAS’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technology-enhanced learning.
