From November 18–22, 2024, Persatuan Siswa Psikologi (PERSEPSI) from the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences & Human Development at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities at BINUS University, Jakarta, successfully hosted an outbound mobility program. The program aimed to enrich academic knowledge, promote cultural exchange, and support community development. A group of twenty psychology students, along with two faculty members, Madam Ross Azura Zahit and Dr. Zaine Zulkifli, participated in this enriching journey, which seamlessly integrated educational visits, cultural exchanges, and impactful community engagement activities.
The program commenced with a warm welcome at BINUS University, where participants were introduced to their student buddies and immersed in the vibrant campus life at BINUS Kijang Campus. During the campus tour, the delegation explored BINUS’s advanced psychology labs, equipped with cutting-edge tools such as eye-tracking technology and virtual reality systems. These state-of-the-art facilities offered valuable insights into innovative learning methods and research applications.
A cultural exchange session further strengthened the bond between participants. UNIMAS students showcased traditional Malaysian dances and martial arts, while BINUS students reciprocated with Indonesian traditional performances. These lively and interactive exchanges underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage while fostering mutual respect and understanding across diverse communities. Concurrently, lecturers from UNIMAS and BINUS engaged in discussions on potential research collaborations, marking a significant step toward strengthening institutional partnerships.
The program’s itinerary also included a visit to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a cultural park representing Indonesia’s rich diversity. Students actively participated in learning the traditional Balinese Kecak dance and explored exhibitions highlighting the nation’s history and culture. Despite intermittent rain, participants remained enthusiastic as they ventured through the park’s vibrant cultural landscapes.
Adding further depth to the experience was a visit to Rumah Sakit Jiwa Marzoeki Mahdi in Bogor, a renowned mental health hospital. The delegation observed patient rehabilitation programs and therapeutic facilities, such as clay-making workshops and vegetable farms, which highlighted the hospital’s community-driven approach to mental health care. Interactions with patients offered a profound understanding of mental health practices in Indonesia.
Beyond cultural exploration, the program emphasized community engagement and social responsibility. A visit to Sekolah Alam Tunas Mulia at Bantar Gebang, situated near Jakarta’s largest landfill site, was particularly impactful. Students organized interactive activities for local children, providing opportunities for recreation and learning. The visit offered a poignant insight into the resilience of communities living in challenging socio-economic conditions, shedding light on the importance of sustainable development initiatives.
The program concluded with a heartfelt farewell dinner hosted by BINUS University. The evening celebrated the bonds formed throughout the program and the knowledge exchanged between participants. Speeches and the exchange of gifts captured the spirit of collaboration and shared growth, leaving lasting memories for all involved.
This outbound mobility program serves as a testament to the power of international collaboration in bridging cultures, enriching educational experiences, and contributing to societal well-being. By integrating academic learning with cultural and community engagement, the initiative not only broadened the perspectives of participants but also reinforced their shared commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
