Experiential learning has proven to be an invaluable method for training effective trainee counsellors. Under the guidance of Associate Professor Dr Nor Mazlina Ghazali, trainee counsellors from Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development (FSCHD), UNIMAS have embarked on a transformative journey through group counselling sessions with teenagers at SMK Wira Penrissen, Kota Samarahan.
One of the trainee counsellors, Allia, shared her insights: “It was eye- opening to see how, with the right guidance, students were able to open up about their struggles. The sense of community and support within the group was noticeable.” Another trainee, Thierry, highlighted the importance of patience and active listening: “Each session taught us the value of being present and genuinely listening to the students. It’s a skill that textbooks cannot fully impart.”
The group counselling sessions at SMK Wira Penrissen have not only benefited the students but have also provided our trainee counsellors with invaluable practical experience. They learned to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, develop their counselling skills, and understand the dynamics of group counselling.
