The second-year trainee counsellors at UNIMAS are currently participating in an experiential learning programme that bridges the gap between classroom knowledge and practical application. This programme, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr Nor Mazlina Ghazali, has been instrumental in shaping the future for trainee counsellors.

One of the trainees, Farisha, described her experience: “In group counselling class, the fishbowl technique and role play sessions proves to be highly beneficial techniques”. They pushed us to think critically and apply our theoretical knowledge in practical ways.” Similarly, Ameerul emphasized the importance of feedback: “The immediate feedback from Assoc. Prof. Dr Nor Mazlina Ghazali and our peers was invaluable. It helped us refine our techniques and approach.”

The role-play sessions covered various aspects of counselling, including exploration, intervention, and the application of helping skills. Trainee counsellors also learned to navigate the challenges of establishing trust and rapport with clients, an essential skill for effective counselling.

This course, KMC2303 Group Laboratory Counselling, has been instrumental in preparing the trainee counsellors for their future careers. They have gained a deeper understanding of the counselling process and developed essential skills that will serve them well in their professional journeys.
