On November 30, 2024, the vibrant learning environment of SMK Sadong Hilir became a hub of creativity and innovation as 30 students participated in an engaging introductory workshop on TRIZ, a systematic tool for fostering creativity and problem-solving. Organized by the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) under the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI), the workshop was held as part of UNIMAS’ impactful Semera Lestari Program.

The Semera Lestari Program is UNIMAS’ commitment to the “1 Universiti 1 Kampung” initiative, aiming to empower rural communities through knowledge and technology. The TRIZ workshop aligned seamlessly with this vision, providing students with hands-on opportunities to develop critical thinking skills and explore innovative approaches to everyday challenges.

Championing TRIZ in Sarawak

UNIMAS has established itself as a champion of TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) in Sarawak, boasting the largest TRIZ-certified community in the region. Over 200 UNIMAS staff have undergone TRIZ certifications, cementing the university’s role as a leader in fostering systematic innovation. This extensive expertise has been instrumental in shaping programs like the introductory workshop at SMK Sadong Hilir, ensuring that participants receive world-class training.

The workshop was facilitated by esteemed TRIZ Level 3 practitioners, Associate Professor Dr. Halikul Lenando and Professor Dr. Tan Chong Eng. Their vast experience and dynamic teaching styles inspired participants to think beyond conventional problem-solving methods and embrace a structured approach to innovation.

Unlocking Creative Potential

During the workshop, students were introduced to the fundamentals of TRIZ and its globally recognized methodologies. Guided by the facilitators, participants explored inventive principles and learned how to creatively analyze and improve existing systems.

The heart of the workshop lay in its collaborative activities. Students, divided into groups, brainstormed ideas to enhance household tools using TRIZ principles. Their enthusiasm and creativity were palpable as they worked together, blending their understanding of theoretical concepts with practical applications. The day concluded with vibrant presentations, where each group showcased their innovative solutions to real-world problems.

The results were nothing short of remarkable—students demonstrated not only a strong grasp of TRIZ principles but also an impressive ability to apply them to meaningful challenges. Their innovative designs reflected a newfound confidence in tackling problems systematically and creatively.

A Continuing Journey of Innovation

This introductory workshop marks just the beginning of the TRIZ program at SMK Sadong Hilir. As part of the Semera Lestari Program, more TRIZ workshops and activities will be conducted over the next three years in Kampung Semera. These sessions aim to deepen students’ understanding of TRIZ, providing ongoing opportunities for them to hone their creativity and problem-solving skills.

This hands-on experience, made possible through the collaborative efforts of CSI, ISITI, and the Semera Lestari Program, underscores UNIMAS’ dedication to nurturing the potential of younger generations. By equipping students with tools like TRIZ, the program creates an inspiring platform for innovation and problem-solving that resonates far beyond the classroom.

As the workshop concluded, the students left with enriched knowledge and skills, ready to explore innovative solutions for real-world challenges and eager for the next chapter of their TRIZ journey.
