by Nur Farawahida Binti Abd Khalil (3rd year Industrial Relation student)
On Saturday, November 16, third-year students from the Industrial Relations and Employment Program (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, UNIMAS) had the privilege of attending a Trade Union Management course organized by the Sarawak Department of Trade Union Affairs (JHEKS) in collaboration with the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak Division.
This invitation provided a valuable opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to trade union management and the latest updates on amendments to the Malaysian Trade Union Act. As students, we explored the practical realities of trade union activities across various industries, broadening our understanding of workplace dynamics and labor rights.
The course offered a platform for us to engage with union representatives, learn from their experiences, and build meaningful connections with affiliates of Malaysian trade unions in Sarawak. Discussions during the event highlighted the critical role of the Trade Union Committee Council in safeguarding workers’ rights and managing the welfare of union members, offering insights into its functions and responsibilities.
On behalf of IREC and the Committee, we—Nur Farawahida and Nur Atikah—extend our heartfelt gratitude to the lecturers and the Coordinator of Industrial Relations from FSSK. Their support made our participation in this program possible, enhancing our knowledge in industrial relations and fostering stronger ties between the university and the industry.
This enriching experience not only deepened our understanding of trade union practices but also strengthened our commitment to contributing to the field of industrial relations in the future.
