Sematan, 18 November 2024 – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) successfully organised a Knowledge Sharing and Technology Transfer Workshop on Grouper Seed Farming in Kampung Tanah Hitam, Sematan, Sarawak. This program is part of the Public University Community Empowerment Program (Komuniti@UniMADANI) initiative, focusing on sustainable development guided by the principles of the Madani economic framework.
The workshop, funded by the Ministry of Finance’s Komuniti@UniMADANI Program, brought together 30 participants from the Sematan/Lundu Area Fishermen Association (PNK), alongside representatives from LKIM Sarawak. The primary goal was to introduce sustainable aquaculture practices and smart water quality management, empowering local fishermen to embrace modern approaches in their livelihoods.
Enhancing Community Skills Through Knowledge and Technology
The program kicked off with an introduction to grouper farming potential in Sarawak by Prof. Dr. Khairul Adha A. Rahim, followed by an engaging session on grouper biology and nutrition by Dr. Ahmad Syafiq Ahmad Nasir, the project leader.
Participants gained valuable insights into managing key water quality parameters, including temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and nitrite levels. Ts. Mohd Nasarudin Harith emphasized the importance of consistent water quality management, highlighting that good water quality ensures optimal fish growth and minimizes disease risks.
The workshop also showcased cutting-edge smart farming technology, such as real-time monitoring systems for water parameters using mobile applications. Dr. Mohd Farid Atan and Mr. Mohamad Saufian Suhaili demonstrated how these tools allow farmers to make informed decisions efficiently, streamlining farm operations.
From Theory to Practice: Hands-On Learning
Participants had the opportunity to explore grouper farming tanks onsite, where they received detailed explanations about smart farming systems. They also participated in practical sessions, including water quality testing and basic feed management techniques. These hands-on activities aimed to equip them with practical knowledge they can directly apply once the project is handed over to the community.
Empowering Communities for a Sustainable Future
Dr. Ahmad Syafiq highlighted the broader impact of the program: “This workshop is a critical step toward strengthening the economic resilience of our fishing communities. It aligns with Sarawak’s vision of becoming a high-income state by 2030. By leveraging science and technology under the Madani economic framework, we are confident that local communities can maximize the potential of grouper farming in their regions.”
Mr. Stanley Lima, Head of the Management Services and Information Management Unit at LKIM Sarawak, praised the initiative for its role in capacity building. “Many fishermen have long relied solely on marine catches for their livelihoods. Programs like this introduce sustainable alternatives, empowering them to increase their income while reducing dependence on declining natural resources,” he remarked.
The positive response from participants was evident. Mr. Awang Izarrudin Awg Su’ut, General Manager of PNK Sematan/Lundu, expressed his enthusiasm: “This initiative provides tangible benefits to our fishing communities, offering them the tools to enhance their technical skills and support sustainable income growth. We hope this collaboration between UNIMAS and the community continues to drive the sustainability of our fisheries sector.”
Even seasoned fishermen like Mr. Alang Rosli, with nearly 50 years of experience, appreciated the knowledge gained. “Though I’ve been in the fishing industry for decades, learning the basics of aquaculture farming has opened new opportunities for me to improve my income. With this knowledge, I’m confident I can diversify my livelihood while managing marine resources more sustainably,” he shared. The program concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony as a token of appreciation for the participants’ commitment. The Grouper Seed Farming Project is hoped to serve as a model for other community projects in generating sustainable and inclusive local economies.
A Step Toward Economic Sustainability
The workshop concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony to recognize participants’ dedication. The Grouper Seed Farming Project is expected to serve as a model for other community initiatives, fostering economic sustainability and resilience.
