The Business Innovation Pitching Competition (BIPC) Bootcamp, held at Kolej Komuniti Kuala Langat, provided an exceptional platform for young innovators to present and refine their entrepreneurial ideas. Darren Lim Wei Jei, a participant representing Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) with support from the UNIMAS Entrepreneurship Centre (UEC), showcased exceptional innovation in sustainable agriculture.

Turning Banana Waste into Sustainable Farming Substrates

The project leader, Darren Lim Wei Jie pitched revolved around transforming banana pseudo-stems and leaves, typically discarded, into cost-effective substrates for oyster mushroom cultivation. This eco-friendly initiative, which contributes to circular economy practices, aims to reduce agricultural waste while promoting sustainable mushroom farming. Darren and his team received extensive guidance from the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology and UEC, making their project a standout at the event.

Winning the Gold Award

Darren Lim Wei Jie’s presentation earned him the prestigious Gold Award at the BIPC Bootcamp. This success underscores the strength of the project, UEC’s commitment to nurturing entrepreneurial talent, and the collaborative efforts between students and faculty.

Acknowledging Support and Looking Ahead

The achievements at the BIPC Bootcamp were made possible through the mentorship of Dr. Mohamad Hasnul bin Bolhassan, a lecturer and Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Alumni (Faculty of Resource Science and Technology), and UEC’s continuous support. This recognition inspires Darren and his team to advance their project, with plans to incorporate advanced recycling methods to enhance both economic and environmental outcomes.
