A Celebration of Culture and Connection
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and the UNIMAS Entrepreneurship Centre provided me with an incredible opportunity to participate in the Borneo Native Festival at Pasar Seni, Kuala Lumpur. Over three vibrant days, I showcased locally inspired products, including apong sugar-infused coffee powder and two unique perfumes, to a diverse audience celebrating Borneo’s cultural heritage.
Highlights of the Festival Experience
Day 1: The festival opened with traditional decorations and eager crowds exploring booths. Initial interest was high, though sales were slower as attendees browsed the vibrant marketplace.
Day 2: Engagement grew significantly with Saturday’s larger crowd. Live demonstrations and free samples turned curiosity into sales, especially for the distinctive apong sugar coffee. A live band performance brought in alumni and visitors, creating a memorable evening of storytelling and shared heritage.
Day 3: The final day saw a surge in sales, driven by a fashion show and celebrity guest Francisca Luhong. Customers expressed great satisfaction with the products, reinforcing the importance of cultural preservation through innovative offerings.
Reflections and Gratitude
This rewarding experience highlighted the enduring appeal of Borneo’s unique traditions and products. Despite the outdoor booth’s challenging placement, the interactions and feedback from UNIMAS alumni and visitors were invaluable. My heartfelt thanks to UNIMAS and the Entrepreneurship Centre for supporting this meaningful opportunity to connect with a community that cherishes Borneo’s heritage.
Preserving Culture, One Product at a Time
The festival was not just a platform for sales but a celebration of the rich traditions of Sarawak. It reminded us of the importance of cultural connections in preserving the essence of Borneo for future generations.
