Dayang Puteri Maimunah binti Awang Azman, or Puteri, a second-year student from the Resource Biotechnology programme from the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, is not your average student. Growing up with dwarfism has been challenging for her, but that does not stop her from achieving her dream of becoming a scientist one day.
Her goal in university is simple and straightforward: to walk across the stage and receive her scroll just like her seniors. However, navigating life as a student with a disability at university comes with a multitude of challenges, including using extra energy to walk to class and having to sit in a special chair during classes.
Puteri admits that there were times when things got very overwhelming, but her strength and resilience in overcoming boundaries and obstacles have inspired her to keep pushing through to succeed. From difficult and complicated projects to a tough and busy semester, Puteri has not let her disability become a barrier to overcoming these issues; instead, she thrives in the face of adversity.
Erynne, Puteri’s biggest supporter since primary school, is a vital support system for her. Through thick and thin, Erynne has encouraged, motivated, and supported Puteri’s life at university. From helping find resources to just being a shoulder to cry on, Erynne’s presence in Puteri’s life is an important part of Puteri’s educational journey.
Puteri may not be the first student with a disability that UNIMAS has received, and she definitely will not be the last. Puteri’s dedication and determination to succeed are incredible testaments to her strength and resilience. Her hope is that people with disabilities will be inspired by her story and continue their education despite the challenges they face. UNIMAS is ready to support individuals with disabilities to improve their lives through education and experience, and Puteri’s story is proof.
