KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) proudly hosted the 31st National Symposium on Mathematical Sciences (SKSM31) and PERSAMA 2024 Award Ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of mathematical sciences.
This year’s SKSM31 is particularly special as it represents the first time the symposium has been held in Sarawak.
The event brought together over 100 research articles from scholars across Malaysia, showcasing the vibrant and dedicated research community within the mathematical sciences.
Additionally, the participation of school mathematics teachers, sponsored by the Ministry of Education Innovation & Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), highlighted the growing connection between academic research and classroom practice.
Professor Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit, Vice Chancellor of UNIMAS, conveyed his gratitude to PERSAMA for entrusting UNIMAS with the responsibility of hosting the event.
His message highlighted the importance of the collaboration.
“This partnership reflects our shared dedication to advancing the mathematical sciences and building a strong community of scholars and practitioners.
“We are deeply committed to promoting STEM education and the development of mathematical sciences, both of which are crucial for the progress of our state and nation.
“This commitment remains central to our mission and drives our ongoing efforts.”
The PERSAMA 2024 Awards, a highlight of the evening, honoured outstanding contributions in various aspects of mathematical sciences.
With 141 submissions across seven categories, including Original Book, Translated Book, Doctoral Thesis, Master’s Thesis, Scientific Journal Article, Mathematical Invention, and Popular Article, the awards reflected the breadth and depth of talent within the mathematical community.

Professor Dr. Maslina Darus, President of PERSAMA, in her speech, highlighted the importance of recognising excellence in the field.
“These awards are not only a recognition of individual achievements but also a celebration of our collective progress in mathematical sciences. The achievements of our awardees set a high standard and inspire continued excellence,” she said.

He noted that mathematical sciences are crucial for this transformation, particularly in areas such as economic planning, data analysis, and developing new technologies.
“Our state’s journey towards becoming a prosperous and advanced economy relies heavily on mathematical sciences.
“This event, and others like it, play a vital role in preparing our students and professionals to meet the challenges ahead,” he stated.
Dr. Annuar also commended UNIMAS for its initiatives in promoting STEM education, including the launch of the new UNIMAS Pre-university programme, Foundation in Computing, which saw an overwhelming response from students.
The program’s success underscores the growing enthusiasm for computing and technology among young Sarawakians, reflecting the state’s potential to nurture future leaders in STEM fields.
