From June 11 to 16, 2024, 39 International Economics students from the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) embarked on an enlightening journey to Bangkok, Thailand, under the guidance of Dr. Nur Farrahanie binti Ahmad Tarmizi and two other lecturers. This trip provided a unique blend of academic and cultural exposure, shaping the students’ understanding of global finance and economics.

Academic Enrichment and Real-World Learning

Under the guidance of SPADE Program Director, Siti Noraini and Vice Program Director, Nur Hanani crafted an itinerary that began with the students exploring Thailand’s economic landscape at Bangkok University. There, they attended expert lectures and engaged with local instructors. The itinerary also included a visit to the Stock Exchange of Thailand, where students gained firsthand insights into live trading and Southeast Asia’s largest financial market. Additionally, the group visited the Bank of Thailand Learning Centre to learn about the history of the Thai Baht and the central bank’s crucial role in maintaining monetary stability.

Cultural Immersion and Diplomatic Insights

Beyond academics, the students visited the Malaysian Embassy in Thailand, gaining an understanding of Malaysia’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen economic and commercial ties with Thailand. Cultural exploration was also a crucial part of the trip, with visits to historic temples like Wat Arun, vibrant street markets, and an introduction to authentic Thai cuisine. These experiences enriched the students’ appreciation of Thailand’s cultural and historical influences on its economy.

Community Engagement and Volunteering

In addition to their academic pursuits, the students made a meaningful impact by volunteering at the Friends for All Children Foundation, an orphanage dedicated to supporting vulnerable children. This experience allowed them to contribute to the community while learning about the social challenges faced by underprivileged groups in Thailand.

The Bangkok field trip left a lasting impression on the students, significantly enhancing their understanding of international economics through practical exposure. The combination of academic learning, cultural immersion, and volunteer work provided a holistic experience that will continue to resonate throughout their academic and professional journeys. Equipped with new financial knowledge, cultural awareness, and a deeper understanding of global economics, the students are now better prepared to navigate the complexities of the international economic landscape.

Ultimately, this trip aimed to shape well-rounded individuals equipped with the knowledge, skills, and perspectives necessary to thrive in a globally interconnected world.
