UNIMAS Holds “Appreciating the Vision & Mission” Workshop for New Academics and Administrators
Kuching, August 26-28, 2024 – The Centre for Applied Learning & Multimedia (CALM) successfully hosted the annual “Appreciating the UNIMAS Vision & Mission” workshop at the Waterfront Hotel, Kuching. This three-day event aimed to familiarise newly appointed academics and administrators from various faculties and departments at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) with the university’s core values, vision, and mission.

The workshop began with an introduction to UNIMAS and CALM by the centre’s Director, Dr Kartini Abd Ghani, and Ts. Dr Dayang Azra binti Awang Mat, the Coordinator for the Academic Training Unit. An ice-breaking session followed, facilitated by Dr Nor Mazlina binti Ghazali, Deputy Director for Learning Advancement, and Dr Edris Bin Aden, Director of the Centre for Student Development. This set a positive and collaborative tone among the participants.

On the first day, UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr Ahmad Hata bin Rasit, delivered an insightful session on the university’s vision, mission, and core values. He emphasised UNIMAS’s commitment to excellence in teaching, aiming to establish the university as a global leader for a sustainable future. The session was followed by a presentation on “AI Hub Sharing” by UNIMAS Chief Digital Officer, Prof. Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, highlighting the university’s initiatives to integrate AI into teaching and learning.

A forum involving key university leaders—Prof. Dr Fitri Suraya Mohamad Hapni Joblie (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and International), Prof. Ir. Dr Al-Khalid Haji Othman (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs and Alumni), and Prof. Ir. Dr Siti Noor Linda Taib (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research & Innovation)—provided participants with insights into their respective portfolios. They also encouraged attendees to engage in research, utilise AI in education, and keep abreast of new teaching trends. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, allowing participants to gain a deeper understanding of the support systems available at UNIMAS.

The second day featured a presentation by UNIMAS Registrar, Haji Azlan Ramli, on “Understanding Governance, Statutes, Management, and Support Services at UNIMAS.” This session provided crucial insights into the university’s operational structure and governance. Dr Juna Liau, President of the UNIMAS Academic Staff Association (PPAU), followed with a session on the role of PPAU in protecting the rights and welfare of academic staff, promoting professionalism in teaching, research, and publications. CALM hosted a delightful dinner, featuring participants’ talents.

The final day of the workshop focused on talent development and organisational performance, with a talk by Prof. Datu Mohd Fadzil bin Abd Rahman, Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS. This was followed by a lively dialogue between participants and deans and directors from various faculties and departments, providing an open platform for further questions and discussions.

The event concluded with group presentations, where participants were tasked with preparing engaging and persuasive presentations aimed at improving the university’s role in education and community development. The top-performing groups were awarded gifts by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Ahmad Hata bin Rasit, along with CALM’s Director Dr Kartini Abd Ghani and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ir. Dr Al-Khalid Haji Othman.

The best participants of the workshop included Dr Muhammad Redza bin Mohd Radzi, Dr Junidah binti Lamaming, and Dr Lau Lik Ming from the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST), who were recognised as the top three. Other notable participants were Dr Faisal Amsyar bin Redzuan and Prof. Ir. Dr Lai Sai Hin from the Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Dr Lennevey Kindi from iSure, Julia anak Cliffton Akoi @ Empadeng from the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development (FCSHD), and Abdul Muhaimin Amin bin Bujang from UNIMAS Endowment & Waqf.

Special recognition was given to Team CALM for their dedication in making the workshop a success. The participants left with valuable insights and skills, poised to contribute to the university’s growth and success.
