Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) hosted its eighth BeDigital Bootcamp from July 29 to August 9, 2024, at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak. This rigorous program aimed to enhance the digital literacy of local undergraduates, providing them with crucial skills needed to thrive in the changing job market. Aligned with Sarawak’s and Malaysia’s broader digital economy objectives, the bootcamp drew 99 students from seven regional universities and garnered strong backing from 24 hiring partners, underscoring the industry’s dedication to cultivating a digitally skilled workforce.
The BeDigital Bootcamp’s modules were meticulously crafted to boost students’ employability, marketability, and entrepreneurial drive in the digital arena. Participants received in-depth training in essential digital skills such as artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, while also participating in hands-on exercises to refine their presentation abilities. The program concluded with a Shark Tank-style pitch event, where students were tasked with delivering compelling business proposals under high-pressure conditions.
The bootcamp concluded with significant achievements for its participants. Fifthteen students from the Faculty of Engineering (FENG) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) received conditional job offers from various hiring partners and PETRONAS subsidiaries. Among them, Caven Tang Tuang Yek, a 23-year-old UNIMAS student from Kuching, stood out by winning the Male Best Camper award and securing job offers from Sarawak Energy Berhad. Caven’s leadership shone during the Shark Tank pitch, where he led his team to a nomination for the Best Pitch award, demonstrating the practical benefits of the bootcamp’s training.
