Innovation knows no bounds. Inspired by Malaysia’s unpredictable weather and their own experiences facing weather-related challenges as students, Aiman bin Abdul Samat from the Faculty of Engineering, along with teammates Dylan Spencer anak Silai, Syawalul Mizan Putera bin Ahmad, and A’in Sarah binti Adell, took on this challenge head-on, resulting in the creation of SkyGuard.

SkyGuard is an advanced smart umbrella that integrates Internet of Things (IoT) technology, sensors, UV protection materials, and a solar panel for sustainable power. It provides not only rain coverage for shelter but also essential lightning protection for safety.

Under the guidance of Dr. Dyg Norkhairunnisa binti Abang Zaidel and with support from the UNIMAS Entrepreneur Centre in refining their presentation and enhancing their competitive edge, the team presented SkyGuard at the first Sarawak Youth Business Idea Competition (SaYBIC) in October 2023. They were selected as one of the top 10 finalists, culminating in the final event held at Dewan Suarah Miri on June 28th to 29th, 2024.

Their hard work paid off as they clinched first place, earning RM3000 and a trophy. Their success was not only measured by the prize money but also by their recognition for innovative excellence, surpassing other finalist teams.

SaYBIC served as a crucial platform for nurturing entrepreneurial spirit and fostering innovative ideas among Sarawak’s tertiary students. It showcased not just Aiman’s technical skill but also his team’s ability to tackle complex challenges and present a compelling business model.

Events like SaYBIC are instrumental in preparing students for the realities of the business world, equipping them with invaluable skills in communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. Aiman and his team’s journey with SkyGuard exemplifies the potential of young innovators to address real-world challenges with creativity and ingenuity.

As we celebrate SkyGuard’s success, I eagerly anticipate seeing more amazing innovations from UNIMAS students, pushing the boundaries of technology and business to solve real-world problems.
