In early May 2024, 49 second-year Quantity Surveying (QS) students from the Faculty of Built Environment accompanied by Dr Mohd Afzan Mohamed, Sr Gui Hun Chuen, Sr Sitti Diana Tamjehi and Dr Siti Syariazulfa Kamaruddin embarked on an unforgettable educational journey to Belaga and Bintulu. This four-day, three-night excursion was meticulously planned to enhance their understanding of key disciplines such as Construction Technology, Construction Measurement and Property Investment and Evaluation.

The primary goal of this trip was to provide hands-on learning experiences related to construction elements such as civil and structural works, integral to their coursework. Additionally, the trip aimed to foster greater engagement with industry professionals. The goal was to provide students with opportunities to learn directly from professionals in their field, gaining insights into current practices, challenges and innovations. This engagement not only enhanced their understanding of real-world applications but also encouraged networking that could benefit their future careers.

The journey began with a long but exciting bus ride from UNIMAS to Sungai Asap, taking around 8 to 10 hours. As night fell, the group arrived at their first destination, the Uma Belun Leo Dian, the longest longhouse in Sarawak, home to the Kayan tribe. This homestay was not just a place to rest, but a cultural immersion, setting the tone for the days ahead.

The following morning, the students embarked on their first major site visit, the Bakun Dam. Prior to entering the site, they participated in a briefing and sharing session with the Sarawak Energy Berhad team. Here, the students gained comprehensive insights into the world of dam construction, offering broader insights into the energy sector. It enriched the students’ understanding of how large-scale projects are managed and executed. This session not only deepened their understanding but also facilitated networking opportunities with industry professionals. Once on-site, they delved into the intricacies of dam construction, witnessing firsthand the immense civil engineering efforts involved. The visit provided a valuable real-world context to their classroom learning, making it an enlightening experience for all involved.

After exploring the Bakun Dam, the group headed to the bustling city of Bintulu. The next day’s agenda included a visit to the construction site of the iconic Bintulu-Jepak Bridge. This experience allowed the students to witness and learn about the complexities of bridge construction firsthand, further broadening their practical knowledge. They observed engineers and workers in action, gaining insights into the planning, design, and execution phases of such a significant infrastructure project. This practical exposure not only deepened their theoretical understanding but also enhanced their practical knowledge of civil engineering principles and construction techniques.

Beyond the academic pursuits, the trip also included time for relaxation and exploration. The students enjoyed visiting local malls, trying local food and relaxing on Tanjung Batu Beach. These activities not only provided a break from their studies but also helped them bond as a group and experience the local culture. 

Finally, on the last day, the group made their way back to UNIMAS, tired but filled with new knowledge and experiences. This educational trip was more than just a series of site visits, it was an enriching journey that combined learning, cultural exchange and camaraderie, leaving lasting memories for all involved.
