Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, 9 March 2024 – In an effort to promote awareness and understanding of reproductive health and sexuality education among youth, Pusat Aktiviti Kanak-Kanak (PAKK) Desa Ilmu collaborated with Qadim Hub, University Sustainability Centre, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to organize a one-day programme held at the Multimedia Theatre, Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, UNIMAS.

The programme, tailored for children aged between 12 to 17 years old, aimed to provide essential knowledge and guidance on various aspects of reproductive health and sexuality. With a turnout of 130 participants, the event featured distinguished speakers Nor Akmariah Binti Abdullah from Rahmah Support Team and Trainer Mohd Khairul Ridhwan Adha Bin Akhiar, who delivered insightful talks on critical topics. The programme also included engaging group activities facilitated by PAKK volunteers.

The sessions covered a range of crucial subjects, including puberty, awareness on healthy gadget and internet usage, phonography, as well as LGBT and STD awareness. By addressing these topics, the programme sought to equip young individuals with the necessary information and skills to make informed decisions and navigate the challenges associated with adolescence.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Rafeah Wahi, Qadim Hub Coordinator, emphasized the importance of targeting youth in this age bracket, stating, “Adolescence is a pivotal stage marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. Providing accurate information and guidance during this period can shape positive attitudes and behaviours towards reproductive health and sexuality.”

Chairperson of PAKK, Adillah Ismail, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort, stating, “As a community partner, we recognize the significance of educating our youth on these crucial topics. Initiatives like these are instrumental in promoting healthy behaviours and fostering informed decision-making among our youth.”

The programme concluded with participants expressing their appreciation for the valuable insights gained, highlighting the importance of continued efforts in promoting reproductive health and sexuality education within the community.

This initiative is also a part of University Social Responsibility (USR) by UNIMAS which aligned with UN SDG 4: Quality Education.
