UNIMAS, 17 January 2024 – The Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Built and Environment at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) proudly announce the organization of the International Science, Technology and Engineering Expo (iSTEEX) 2024 in collaboration with The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sarawak Branch. This groundbreaking event is set to take place on 17 January 2024 at Dewan Mutiara, DeTAR Putra UNIMAS in Kota Samarahan. It is part of the programme under the International Engineering Conference (EnCon) 2024, which will be held on 14 – 16 February 2024 at The Waterfront Hotel, Kuching.


iSTEEX is a competition in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) innovation aimed at nurturing the talents of school students aged 10-17 years old. The participating teams, consisting of enthusiastic students, will showcase their ingenuity through poster presentations, highlighting innovative solutions and projects in various STEM disciplines. The officiating ceremony is graced by the distinguished presence of Puan Anielia anak Siam, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD) Sarawak. A welcoming speech is delivered by UNIMAS’s Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof Dr Ir Siti Noor Linda bt Taib. The Ministry has pledged its dedication to advancing STEM education and fostering innovative approaches within the field. This initiative is particularly focused on talent development in Sarawak, aiming to fortify the capabilities of future generations through STEM activities. The collaboration between UNIMAS and The IEM Sarawak Branch underscores a shared commitment to promoting STEM education and innovation within the region.

This strategic partnership aims to create a platform where budding talents can showcase their capabilities and interact with professionals in the engineering and built environment sectors. The competition has attracted participation from 22 teams representing schools from across Sarawak. Each team brings a unique perspective and innovative project to the forefront, contributing to the diverse array of STEM-based innovations on display. The event provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to exchange ideas, collaborate with like-minded peers, and receive valuable feedback from experienced professionals in the field. As part of the competition, students will present their projects through engaging poster sessions, allowing them to articulate their concepts and innovations effectively. The judging panel, comprising esteemed experts and professionals from The IEM Sarawak Branch, will evaluate the projects based on creativity, scientific rigour, and potential real-world applications.

STEEX serves as a significant stepping stone for young talents aspiring to pursue careers in STEM related fields. By fostering a spirit of innovation and critical thinking, the competition not only recognizes outstanding achievements but also inspires participants to explore the limitless possibilities within the realms of science and technology. The collaborative effort among UNIMAS, MEITD and IEM Sarawak Branch reflects a shared vision of advancing STEM education and empowering the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
