In a bold and transformative move, the Faculty of Science and Resource Technology (FRST, UNIMAS) embarked on a groundbreaking mission to cultivate a new generation of young scientists. The initiative, aptly named “The Science Avenger” was first initiated on 30th November 2022 with aims to identify and empower budding scientist heroes from upper secondary schools, instilling a passion for science and paving the way for a future workforce equipped to meet the demands of the digital economy and sustainable development in Sarawak and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in going through the era of IR4.0. The Real Living Lab UNIMAS served as the battleground for this scientific endeavour, providing an immersive environment for students to delve into the world of STEM. The selected Heroes of Science Avengers was given training in science skills and concepts (Ask, Relate, learn, Reflect) through specific modules delivered by university lecturers and students at the Real Living Lab UNIMAS. To date, “The Science Avenger” Project has positively impacted schools as far as the Lundu area.
Leading the project were the dynamic duo, Prof Dr Ramlah Zainuddin and Assoc Prof Dr Devagi Kanakaraju. Their vision was supported by two individual Dana Lestari grants from the University Sustainable Centre (USC), UNIMAS. The project comprised two integral components: “The Science Avenger: Application of future-ready attributes in nature-based STEM Education” and “Contextualization of STEM teaching through The Science Avenger: Indoor Laboratory program Box (Lab in a Box).” Central to the Science Avenger project were five modules, each tailored to a specific field of study – Biotechnology, Chemistry, Aquatic, Zoology, and Plants. These modules, presented in an engaging and accessible format, incorporated hands-on kits known as “Lab in a Box.” Crafted by expert lecturers, these kits served as tangible tools to bring theoretical concepts to life, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific principles. The inception of the “The Science Avenger” Project saw a total of 30 students and six dedicated teachers from SMK Tun Abdul Razak, SMK Tabuan Jaya, SMK Kota Samarahan, SMK Muara Tuang, and SMK Sadong Jaya embarking on this journey.
The inauguration ceremony, presided over by Associate Prof Dr Samsur Mohamad, the Dean of FRST, marked the beginning of an exciting chapter in STEM education. The students were not merely passive recipients of knowledge; they were introduced to the concept of Problem-Oriented Project Based Learning (POPBL). Prof Dr Ramlah Zainuddin delivered an enlightening talk, encouraging students to approach problem-solving with a hands-on, collaborative mindset. This methodology aimed to equip them with practical skills, preparing them for real-world challenges in the scientific domain. Upon completion of the rigorous training, the students were not only equipped with newfound knowledge and skills but also received the prestigious title of “Science Avenger”. As these Science Avengers step into the limelight, they carry with them the potential to transform the landscape of science education and inspire countless others to follow in their footsteps.
